Swimming team makes big splash at Pan Am Games

TORONTO (July 19, 2015) -- The Bahamas’ swimming team at the Pan Am Games made history in medal presentations and broke several national records throughout the races, the team’s coach Andy Loveitt confirmed.

“We’ve got now a Pan Am record,” Loveitt said. “We’ve got five Bahamas records this week.”

Loveitt was referring in part to Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace’s historic swim that earned a bronze in the Women’s 100m freestyle – The Bahamas’ first individual swimming medal for the Pan Am Games. She followed that swim two days later with a win in the 50m freestyle to earn the country’s first gold in swimming at the Pan Am Games. Along the way, she set a new Pan Am Games record in the event.

“We’re still a growing program. We’ve only got five swimmers here that qualified. It’s not like track and field that’s got a much bigger team,” he said. “So if we’re coming here at the end of the first week, we’ve got a gold and a bronze for The Bahamas, it’s excellent.”

The Bahamas also got new swim records in the women’s 400m and 800m freestyle as Joanna Evans made sixth and fifth place finishes, respectively, in the events. The final records were set by Dustin Tynes, who set new marks in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Tynes’ finish in the event made the B qualifying standard for the 2016 Olympics, improving his chances of competing in the Rio Games.
