Softball Makes Development Donation

NASSAU (Jan. 19, 2014) -- The Bahamas Softball Federal (BSF) made a donation of a softball kit to the Freedom Farm League on January 18 as part of its development program.

Softball and baseball joined forces, forming one organization, and attempted to return to the Olympic program last year.  The effort did not gain enough support among International Olympic Committee voters and the sports fell short of their bid.

“I am sure that in subsequent Olympics, it will be back there, said BSF president Burkett Dorsett. “You have now through that amalgamation, one of the largest sporting bodies in the world with some 200 plus countries involved. Come March of this year in Switzerland, there will be a congress that would involve both bodies. The organization is now called WBSC – World Baseball Softball Federation.”

Meanwhile, the BSF is working on building softball and baseball within the country.  Mr. Dorsett said combining the efforts of softball and baseball will assist both sports.  Their latest effort was the donation of a softball kit to the league.

“Our international body from time to time gives us these developmental kits,” Mr. Dorsett said. “These leagues are considered developmental leagues. As you know, there are no senior programs for softball in these leagues. So we gave them the kit to assist them with the development of the ladies program. The kit involves some 12 or 15 gloves, catcher’s gear, helmets, bats, balls, tapes and so forth.”

Mr. Dorsett said he looks forward to seeing continued improvements in softball and baseball skills in The Bahamas.
