Bahamas Rep Completes Soccer Course

The Bahamas participated in a high-level coaches course for soccer recently, paving the way for higher performance out of Bahamian female soccer players.

Mary Woodside Knowles represented The Bahamas at the Pan American Sports Organization’s (PASO) Continental High Level Technical Course on Women’s Football.  The course, held in Queretaro, Mexico, drew 45 participants from 25 countries.

“The women’s game is becoming faster, stronger, more technical, more tactical and more competitive,” Woodside Knowles said when reporting on the course. “A technical player who is good but not physically trained will be limited as to how far she can go because she has not been pushed physically. At the same time, we do not only depend on physical training because the more skilled, best coached and the more tactical team will probably win over the team that is fit with no skill.”

Although some cultures discourage girls in playing soccer, Bahamians are now seeing the importance of allowing girls to play the game at young ages, Ms. Woodside Knowles said.  She noted that approximately 200 girls between ages three and 12 are playing organized soccer in Grand Bahama.

The high level course in Mexico was lectured by Coach Leonardo Cuellar, head coach of the Mexican national women’s football team since its inception in 1989, and Coach Mehdi Mehdaouli, who is responsible for strength and physical training of the Mexican national women’s teams.
